Recruitment firm Hy-phen, successfully used the EBW’s Business EQ assessment along with the recruitment report option as a key part of their volume recruitment campaigns for Steria for 3 years running.

Recruiting a large number of candidates can be a daunting task for any organisation. “Volume recruitment” refers to the process of recruiting a large number of candidates for a particular position or for multiple positions. While volume recruitment can help companies fill their vacancies quickly, it also comes with its own set of challenges.

When Steria, a European provider of IT solutions, tasked Hy-phen with assessing and interviewing 200 candidates for their positions, Hy-Phen needed a way of carrying out the work efficiently whilst also making sure that the right candidates were matched to the right jobs.

The problems posed by Volume Recruitment

When carrying out volume recruitment, there are a set of common problems that have to be dealt with and overcome:

  1. Time constraints

One of the main challenges of volume recruitment is the time constraint. Recruiting a large number of candidates can be time-consuming and exhausting for recruiters. They have to review hundreds of resumes, conduct multiple interviews, and screen the candidates for the required skills.

  2. Cost

Volume recruitment can be expensive as it requires more resources, such as time, money, and manpower. Recruiting a large number of candidates can also lead to a high turnover rate, which can further increase the costs of recruitment.

  3. Quality of candidates

When recruiters are under pressure to fill vacancies quickly, they may overlook some of the critical aspects of candidate evaluation. This can lead to the selection of under-qualified candidates who are not fit for the job.

Hy-phen wanted to reduce the risks associated with all of these problems as far as possible to make sure the campaign was a success.

Using Business EQ to Improve Recruitment Efficiency

By using the EBW Business EQ assessment and tools, Hy-phen provided a consistent and standardised approach to recruitment - from job analysis through to interviewing at the assessment centre.

Step 1: Understanding requirements using job analysis

The process started with EBW Global Psychologists conducting job analysis work, that showed that successful professionals at Steria were able to work effectively in teams and collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders, across different departments. It was found that these individuals possessed strong communication skills and were able to manage their emotions, especially when dealing with challenging situations such as technical issues or project delays.

The primary roles that Steria wanted to fill were responsible for designing and implementing technology solutions that impacted the daily operations of their clients’ business. Therefore, candidates needed to be able to quickly understand the needs and goals of the organisation, as well as the perspectives of end-users, to develop effective solutions. It was recognised that candidates would need to be empathetic and better at understanding the perspectives of different stakeholders, to lead to better alignment of technology solutions to their business objectives.

It was also discovered that successful employees at Steria were able to adapt to changes and learn new technologies quickly. Therefore, the ability to assess candidates accurately for resilience, levels of adaptability for change and learning new skills was important to predict who would be successful in the roles.

Step 2: Use of the Business EQ Assessment and Recruitment Report

The EBW Business EQ Assessment along with the Recruitment Report option was chosen by Hy-phen for measuring candidate’s Business Emotional Intelligence and their ability to recognise and manage their own emotional behaviour and the emotional behaviours of others.

The EBW Recruitment Report is ideal for helping recruiters evaluate the soft skills of candidates, such as communication, empathy, and teamwork as well as their level of resilience and adaptability. These skills are crucial for success in most jobs but are very difficult to measure in an interview without the Business EQ Assessment.

The Business EQ Recruitment Report saves preparation and interview time by providing insights into a candidate’s Business EQ, combined with a semi-structured interview guide, with unique focused behavioural questions.

Benefits of using Business EQ

“The EBW has enhanced our recruitment process by allowing us to identify candidate’s Emotional Intelligence. The assessment only takes 20 minutes and the candidates’ reports are generated prior to the interview stage, enabling our recruiters to raise unique questions for each candidate rather than “one size fits all” ~ Matt Bennett, Graduate Recruitment Manager.

The systematic and objective approach of measuring “soft skills” using the EBW Business EQ Assessment and making sure recruiters used bespoke questions to provide an individual approach for each candidate, ensured that Steria got the right candidates for the right job.

The effectiveness of this approach has meant that Hy-phen has continued to use the EBW framework and assessment with Steria for 3 years.

Focusing on Business EQ enabled Steria to identify candidates who:

  1. Were more likely to stay with the company for a more extended period, reducing the turnover rate and saving the company time and money on recruitment.

  2. Were more likely to perform well in their job. Managers have reported this has led to increased productivity, better job performance, and higher job satisfaction.

In conclusion, volume recruitment can be challenging for recruiters, but using Business Emotional Intelligence can help address some of the problems associated with it. By using Business EQ assessments along with the recruitment report option, recruiters can streamline the recruitment process, saving time and money and ultimately finding the best candidates for the job.
